Where to Fish for Tuna in Panama

We specialize in great yellowfin tuna fishing. Our lodge location gives us access to the key areas where the Tuna migrate through the waters here in Panama. They arrive feeding near the southern part of Isla Jicarita and throughout the season work their way north. By end of March the Tuna can be found in large numbers near both of our fishing grounds, Hannibal Banks and Isla Montuosa.

Depending on water temperatures in May and June the tuna fishing can be found at it’s height. The Tuna are around the ” Tuna Coast” which is a short 10 miles offshore from our Lodge. In particular, Punta Mariato is also known as the “Tuna Coast” where our big yellowfins are routinely caught. There are times that are so many tuna are feeding at the surface that the waters churn in what is known as “Tuna Frenzies” or “Tuna Boils”. Tuna are one of the oceans best tasting fish that are also known for putting up one of the most exciting fights!

Panama Tuna Fishing Techniques

We rely on several methods to bring in the big Yellowfin Tunas. Live bait, popping, cut bait, jigging and trolling are among the techniques we employ, depending on where the fish are and how they’re feeding. Live bait is often the best way to catch these finicky fish. We try both big and small bait fish. A bridled Bonito behind the boat will usually attract one of the illusive big “Cow” Tunas. Another popular bait fish we typically use are Blue Runners, also known as Green Jacks. Blue Runners are usually plentiful and we use them often. We will bring a live well full of the live bait with us when we can and it usually means a good day Tuna Fishing.

Using cut bait can be a great method when Tuna Fishing in Panama. Usually we use frozen sardines, chumming the water behind the boat. When a huge Tuna bites down on your chunk at the end of your line, you know your in for a fight!

When the fish are near the surface, one of the most exciting tuna fishing methods is top-water popper casting: The vicious strike followed by the bruising battle is something that most fishermen will always remember. One of our favorite way to catch Tuna.

At other times, jigging can be highly productive for yellowfin. In this technique, we bounce an artificial lure called a jig off or near the bottom or even within a school of tuna. When a tuna strikes a jig it can be even more exciting than popping.
